I purchased Acronis Backup & Recovery 11 Workstation with Universal Restore so that I would have the ability to manually collect drivers and restore to different HW in the event it happened. Not to go on a rant & rave, but I am hot about this right now. Images were hosted on a box running 3CDaemon FTP server and uploaded or downloaded over the network. One catch though is that following the walkthrough, you may not have drivers for your NIC in your bootable environment, so make sure you have a thumb-drive to put the image on (it's a highly compact, file-based image)įor XP images, I used Parted Magic (Pmagic) and Ghost 4 Linux (g4l). While what I just listed is not a thorough solution, it's a start if you just need to a do a few real quick. Formatting before applying the image will fix that. One thing to note is that simply applying the image is non-destructive - it will leave your previous stuff there but apply the new OS (I *realized* this - they mention it but it hadn't sunk in - when moving a PC from 64- to 32-bit, as it still had the programs left afterwards).
